Carrier-borne aircraft revolutionised naval warfare during the Second World War. In the Atlantic and Mediterranean their work ranged from convoy protection to such dramatic actions as Taranto and the Bismarck and Tirpitz strikes; but it was in the vast reaches of the Pacific they came into their own.
With the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 a new era dawned; for the first time a naval engagement was fought by aircraft alone, without the surface ships of either side coming within sight of each other. Moreover, as the sinking of the Repulse and Prince of Wales in 1941, and of the Yamato, pride of the Japanese navy, in 1945 demonstrated, the age of the battleship as king-pin of the fleet was over.
