The editor Gilbert Wakefield (1756-1801), Unitarian controversialist, was "one of the two leading British scholars of his time, the other being Richard Porson" (ODNB). Wakefield taught at Hackney College, a dissenting academy where William Hazlitt was briefly a student, and later edited a number of classical and theological texts, including Horace, Lucretius, and Virgil. With the booklabel to the front doublures of literary journalist and author Charles Whibley (1859-1930), on whose recommendation T. S. Eliot was appointed literary editor and a member of the board of directors of Faber and Gwyer. Two volumes, octavo (203 x 127 mm). Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, spines lettered in gilt, compartments blocked in gilt and blind, wide gilt and blind floral borders, gilt turn ins with alternating gilt and blind floral rolls, mottled pink and black doublures and free endpapers, red morocco hinge supports tooled in gilt and blind, gilt edges. Portrait frontispieces and 2 other plates. Without errata slip. Removed label with some residue to initial binder's blank of vol. II and terminal blank of vol. I.
