Lyman played banjo and harmonica as a member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band starting in 1963. In 1966 Lyman founded the Fort Hill Community in Roxbury, Boston. His underground newspaper Avatar (published 1967-68), shocked the staid Bostonians at that time.
