The author was Professor of Chemistry and Dyeing at the Lowell Textile School. This book was intended to be "introductory to the author's lectures on the subject of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing". The front board has an area of bleaching (possibly from a careless laboratory session?). The spine is darkened such that the title is difficult to read. There is some wear to the extremities. The top and fore edges have a previous owner's name and a date (1936) written on them. The front free endpaper has some pencilled notes. Six pages have some notes inked on them. The binding is square and tight. A nice copy of a very scarce title.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good+/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

This article by Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was read before the Society on Nov. 16, 1832. Bache was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and the grandson of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Dallas. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he taught engineering there and became a second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He was a professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843 and also served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia from 1839 to 1842. In 1843 he became superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, a position he held until his death.
