Sobre este artículo

Hardcover. Very Good. John Murray, London, 1835, volume LIII comprising numbers CV, February 1835, and CVI, April 1835; 8vo, pp [vi], 568; half contemporary calf, marbled sides, spine panelled gilt; some light rubbing in places, occasional slight foxing or other marking but overall in good, firm and clean condition; simple episcopal bookplate with the initials T. L. C. on the front pastedown. ... ... ... The periodical offers essays and comment on politics and literature and reviews recently published books. The opening review, 19pp, is of George Bennett's travels as a naturalist, FLS and FRCS, during 1832, 1833 and 1834 in New South Wales, Batavia, the Pedir Coast, Singapore and China. This is followed by 38pp on the"Correspondence de Victor Jacquemont, avec sa Famille et plusiers de ses Amis, pendant son Voyage dans l'Inde, 1828-1832". There's comment on other material including ancient Egypt, Thebes, Nubia, hieroglyphics and notation more generally, and the usual features around religion, religious dissent and political matters. At the time of publication the PM was Sir Robert Peel and there's an essay on the December issue of the so-called Tamworth Manifesto, a nominal address to Peel's constituency but considered a statement of the foundational principles of the then modern Conservative party in, with Peel, its shift from old Tory views. If there were ever an Uxbridge and South Ruislip Manifesto issued it would no doubt differ in many important respects from its predecessor, not least in welcoming "a perpetual vortex of agitation" rather than contemning it as did Peel. And, as ever, the relatively new independent country of the United States continues to interest the periodical and its readers, number CVI opening with a 24pp essay review on three works by French, British and US authors, the last specifically on New England and later reviewing a work by Henry Ewbank, a former US Member of Congress, titled "The Influence of Democracy on Liberty, Property and the Happiness of Society considered ... ". There's consideration of yet another round the world voyage, this detailed in Dr F J F Meye's "Reise um die Erde ... in den Jahren 1830, 1831 und 1832".
