Contemporary half calf over textured foliate-patterned boards, the spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt and with contrasting morocco title labels lettered in gilt. Chromolithographic additional title page and contents leaf by W. Dickes. Marbled endpapers. pp. [2], [i], ii-[vi], [7]- 230, [2]. Old pencil notes to the front free endpaper verso. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a scuff to the leather of the top corner of the upper board and some rubbing to the spine and corners. The contents with a 1cm tear to the head of the second blank and a few spots of light foxing to the preliminary pages are otherwise in very good order. An uncommon work by the English novelist Anne Manning (1807-1879), best known for her numerous works of historical fiction. As with most of Manning's anonymously issued works the text is couched in antique language, designed to offer her readership a form of historical authenticity. Through this medium Manning's works - often regarding the lives of past women - introduced a "considerable familiarity with historical facts, and female observation", creating stories which "encompassed both public greatness and everyday private domesticity" (ODNB). 'Queen Philippa's Golden Booke' is very much in this vein, constructed around six narrators, two of whom are women, each telling a medieval tale, three of which are about women.
An interesting pencil note to the endpaper relates that this is the only work known by the illustrator William Dickes (1815-1892) with his address as at "5½ Old Fish St, Doctors' Commons." Incidentally this is the address used by Dickes at the Great Exhibition of 1851 when showing his 'Oil colour printing.'
