FIRST EDITION (1886), small 4to, 220 x 165 mm, 8¾ x 6¼ inches, in the original publisher's unbleached linen, different coloured illustrations to upper and lower covers, gilt title and rules to both covers, all edges gilt, dark green endpapers, 58 pages. Pretty coloured frontispiece, coloured title illustration and coloured illustrations throughout. Top corners of boards bumped (see image), a few faint fox spots to upper cover, small bookplate and bookseller's tiny label on front pastedown, very slight shallow crease to top corners of pages 15 mm (¾") from corner tip, due to bump to cover corners, no inscriptions, faint offsetting opposite a few coloured illustrations, no foxing. Clean bright very good copy of delightful children's book, quite common in first edition. Our copy collates to Schuster, Printed Kate Greenaway, 165 1(f) who lists no fewer than 10 variants of the first edition.
