Floral endpapers, b&w photographs, drawings. Contents: The First Upper Canada Militia; The Upper Canada Militia of 1812; The Militia of the Rebellion of 1837; The Volunteer Rifle Companies of "Fifty-Six"; Organized as a Battalion; The Fenian Excitement; The Baptism of Blood at Ridgeway; A Period of Peace and Progress; The North-West Rebellion - With Otter to Battleford; Fighting Poundmaker at Cut Knife Hill; Fifteen Years of Regimental Work and Development; Queen's Own Men in Khaki; Under the Admiring Gaze of Royalty; An Honourable Record on the Rifle Range; Record of Officers' Services. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown; waviness to fore-edge of text block; page leaf 133/134 has old tape in gutter, has fold marks across page and small area of surface paper loss on page 134 effecting three lines of text - missing piece is attached to tape; light water staining and waviness at top corner of advertising pages - heavier towards end of book; water marks and staining at top corner of most pages - heavier on approx. first 30 pages and progressively less towards end of text pages; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; some light edge wear. Following page shows full-length portrait in color of Lord Roberts, with intact and still white tissue guard. 156 p., clean and unmarked on fine glossy paper, followed by 58 p. of fascinating ads for such products as gutta percha and ice, as well as Burdock Blood Bitters and the Independent Order of Foresters.Many wonderful ill. and period photos within, including those accompanying ads in back. Front gutter cracked but binding firm. half leather boards have gilt lettering aned maple-leaf logo for Queen's Own Rifles of Canada.Leather stripped from spine, so price reduced. However, this 12" x 9" volume will require extra shipping.

Ottawa, Canada: E.L. Ruddy, 1903. First Canadian Edition . Hardcover (with Dust Jacket). Very Good. large 8vo (84 pages; illustrated with black and white photographs; decorative initial capital letters in each chapter). This is a very good copy of the First Canadian edition without dust jacket as issued. PRESENTATION COPY inscribed on the flyleaf in ink by the regiment’s commander, Lt. Col. S. Maynard Rogers, and dated 8 July, to the 5th Massachusetts Volunteers. The book has been given a new spine; the hinges have been repaired. The corners of the cloth cover are slightly worn, and there is a faint damp-spot on front cover. Contents fine and include period advertisements from Ottawa-area businesses. The Forty-Third Regiment served in the Fenian Raids, the Northwest Rebellion and the Boer War.
