Here we meet not only the inspired warrior, but his adversaries- the patrician veteran Metellus and the youthful genius Pompey. We learn that Rome survived because Romans had stomach for survival and were willing to pay the price in enemy and innocent blood aline. Much as with modern-day guerrillas, Sertorius' band could not have held out without a sanctuary, had to keep on the move, and could withstand any stress except a leisure that gave the fighters time to conspire against their leader.

Quintus Sertorius and the Legacy of Sulla is the first complete study of this fascinating Roman in the last sixty years.

Through the career of one soldier, Philip Spann illumines the problems of Roman society and government during the fifth-teen critical years of the republic's decline. For the classical scholar, Spann adds insight into the predicament of Sulla's victims and into the transformation of young Pempey from Adulescentulus Carnifex (boy butcher) into Pompeius Magnus, august consul at are thirty-six. For the more casual reader, this record of events 2,000 years ago offers a lesson as timely as those from Vietnam and Nicaragua.

Philip O. Spann earned his PH.D. in History and Classics from the University of Texas at Austin and currently teaches classics at the University of Florida Gainesville. He has been the recipient of a Rome Prize Fellowship in Classical Studies for study at the American Academy in Rome and a Senior Fulbright Research Fellowship, which took him to Spain.
