London: Frederick Warne and Co, c1905. Cloth. Good. 9.5" by 8". Randolph Caldecott. A charming illustrated picture book comprising of four tales for children. Comprising of The Diverting History of John Gilpin, The House that Jack Built, An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog and The Babes in the Wood. Compiled and illustrated by Randolph Caldecott. Originally these four tales were issued as separate picture books. Posthumously, this series was created with several stories per book. Caldecott was a well known illustrator and the Caldecott medal was named in his honour. He influenced the illustration of nineteenth century children's books. In original publisher's pictorial cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Spine has faded. Small score mark to the front board from the head to the tail. Offsetting to the endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Tape repairs to pages 10-14 of John Gilpin at the gutter. Chipping to the foredge of several leaves. Closed tears to a few leaves, not affecting the text. Pages are generally bright with occasional scattered spots. Good
