New York: Crown Publishers, Inc, 1988. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 24 cm. ix, [1], 261, [1] pages. Appendices: Economies of Scale, Prospects Facing the Year 2000. Notes. Books and Documents. Index. Pencil erasure on front endpaper. Inscribed by the author. Jonathan Kozol (born September 5, 1936) is an American writer, educator, and activist, best known for his books on public education in the United States. Death at an Early Age, his first non-fiction book, is a description of his first year as a teacher in the Boston Public Schools. It was published in 1967 and won the National Book Award in Science, Philosophy and Religion. Among the other books by Kozol are Rachel and Her Children: Homeless Families in America, which received the Robert F. Kennedy Book award for 1989 and the Conscience-in-Media Award of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools, which won the New England Book Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992. The story that jolted the conscience of the nation when it first appeared in "The New Yorker" Jonathan Kozol is one of America's most forceful and eloquent observers of the intersection of race, poverty, and education. His books, from the National Book Award-winning "Death at an Early Age" to his most recent, the critically acclaimed "Shame of the Nation," are touchstones of the national conscience. First published in 1988 and based on the months the author spent among America's homeless, "Rachel and Her Children" is an unforgettable record of the desperate voices of men, women, and especially children caught up in a nightmarish situation that tears at the hearts of readers. With record numbers of homeless children and adults flooding the nation's shelters, "Rachel and Her Children" offers a look at homelessness that resonates even louder today.
