The historical story of the whole logging, lumber, and rafting industry of the Mississippi basin from its beginning, through its extraordinary zenith, to its decline and end. The author, who was born in a city on the Mississippi (Davenport, Iowa), drew from his own experiences on the river as well as from the recollections of veterans and from old letters and diaries in reconstructing this milieu of river life. Charles Edward Russell (1860-1941) was an American author, editor, and activist. He won a Pulitzer in 1928 for his biography of the German-American conductor Theodore Thomas and is recognized for being one of the founders of the NAACP (1909).
