Stokes Company, New York, 1914. First U.S. edition. *Probably the most famous and influential English novel of working-class life. The author was born Robert Noonan [or Croker] in Dublin in 1870, t he illegitimate son of Mary Ann Noonan and Samuel Croker. He settled in England in 1901, working as a house painter and sign-writer. He completed his novel (w hich he planned to call The Ragged Arsed Philanthropists) in 1910 but was unable to find a publisher for it before his death from tuberculosis in 1911. In 1914 a heavily edited and abridged version of the novel was posthumously published. It was reprinted several times before the original version was finally published in 1955, after which time the spelling of the author's pseudonym was standardized to Tressell.
Sinopsis
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists tells the story of a group of working men who are joined one day by Owen, a journeyman-prophet with a vision of a just society. Owen's spirited attacks on the greed and dishonesty of the capitalist system rouse his fellow men from their political quietism. A masterpiece of wit and political passion and one of the most authentic novels of English working class life ever written.
