The author had been a war correspondent during WWII and a staff writer for LIFE magazine for a number of years afterwards. He produced at least five novels and two major non-fiction works. This is primarily the history of railroads in the west beginning in the 1860s. Includes dozens of photos and illustrations along with descriptive text. This volume contains such chapters as: A Work of Visionaries--or of Fools? Barons of the Western Roads, Working on the Railroad, The Ride to California, The Men Who Made the Trains Go, and A Gaudy Rail-Borne Harvest.
