Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair/good. Octavo. xv, [1], 1066 pages. Original green cloth boards with gilt titles and decorative elements on upper board and spine, pictorial endpapers, book lightly cocked (typical for this volume of 1065 pp.), spine tips rubbed, gilt on the upper board mostly rubbed away, in a price-clipped jacket with short tears at the spine tips and corners and a sunned spine. Front hinge is broken exposing the webbing. Browning to the front inner hinge. Pages 849 to the end have light dampstains and slight warping on the edges. No mildew or mold inside. Considered by many to be a "Great American Novel," and the basis for the film of the same name. Lockridge's only major work; he committed suicide in the year of publication.
