Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Nevertheless, it was a major undertaking, engaging major Russian literary talents of the day, with the still-authoritative translation by Nora Gal (1912-1991) and Raisa Oblonskaya (1924-2010), an introduction by celebrated literary critic Raisa Orlova…

The book from Russian Imperial Library of Nicoulaus II. The proposed articles were written at different times and on different occasions, but their protagonist invariably remained that motley complex of stratifications of our Russian public, which is known under the general name - the intelligentsia: moderate and revolutionary; fussing about cheese artels and dreaming of world reorganization; following the representatives of the propertied society - in the construction of life, and composing its own - party construction, as an antithesis to this construction; the intelligentsia, gravitating towards the peasantry, and the intelligentsia, with the proletariat at the center of their political plans and socialist prospects.

Descripción:
Original exceedingly rare Russian Language 1st (Pirate) Edition of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Meets all the issue points for the true 1st Edition - "Roman" to title page, 634 pages, publishers imprint in cyrillic, and 2 page introduction (lacking from later Russian editions). Unusually tight, bright, Very Good condition, with no inscriptions and only light toning to closed page edges. Several gatherings are unevenly browned as usual, due to differing paper stocks used in printing. Issued without a dust-jacket.The publication of the Russian text of Doctor Zhivago was attended by odd circumstances. It first appeared in a 'pirated' (or possibly semi-authorised) edition, a short time before Feltrinelli's official edition came out in Milan. The 'pirated' version, however, bore Feltrinelli's imprint and were produced by Mouton, the reputable firm of Dutch printers with whom he was negotiating, and to whom he had sent the manuscript. Declassified documents reveal that the CIA sought to embarrass the…

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1963. First U.S. edition with scarce wraparound band reading " 'DUTTON EDITION IS SUPERIOR'/ Harrison Salisbury - NEW YORK TIMES." This edition translated from the Russian by Ralph Parker whereas the edition published in the U.S. the same year by Frederick A. Praeger was translated by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley (the Praeger precedes this one per Fiene). Harrison E. Salisbury's January 22, 1963, review reads in part: "Of the two translations neither comes close to reproducing the rough vigor of the author's concentration camp slang .... However, Ralph Parker's version in the Dutton edition is superior to the patchwork thrown together by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley for Praeger. The most striking blooper of the Hayward-Hingley translation is to put in the mouths of the prisoners the phrase 'Comrade Warder.' The prisoners were forbidden ... to call the guards 'comrade' ...." 8vo light gray-green rough cloth boards stamped in green on front and spine; top edge stain…
