Clean, crisp, bright, corners sharp, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind.

Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Vol 1 pages 1-2 are torn and damaged, but without loss, apparently glued back in. Vol 3 smaller tear to the inner margin, just into the text, reinforced along the rear. Pages 373/4 in vol 4 have tears along the edges and there is reinforcing to the inner margins of serval pages. Some tears to other page edges also. Some spotting and staining throughout. Original exceedingly rare Russian Language 1st (Pirate) Edition of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Meets all the issue points for the true 1st Edition - "Roman" to title page, 634 pages, publishers imprint in cyrillic, and 2 page introduction (lacking from later Russian editions). Unusually tight, bright, Very Good condition, with no inscriptions and only light toning to closed page edges. Several gatherings are unevenly browned as usual, due to differing paper stocks used in printing. Issued without a dust-jacket.The publication of the Russian text of Doctor Zhivago was attended by odd circumstances. It first appeared in a 'pirated' (or possibly semi-authorised) edition, a short time before Feltrinelli's official edition came out in Milan.
