His rigourous, self-critical approach led him to change his position across his career. In 1990, Putnam was Walter Beverley Pearson Professor of Mathematical Logic and Modern Mathematics and Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University. The prestigious Gifford Lectures are "virtuoso performances" and considered "the highest honor in a philosopher's career"; the 1990-1991 series was held at the University of St. Andrew's.
