The top edge is a trifle dusty and there are a small handful of foxing spots to the fore-edge. There are no previous owner inscriptions. In the VERY RARE dustwrapper with the all-important price of 5/- to the inside flap. This is the cloth edition that was originally offered for sale at 5/- (there was also a paperback edition sold at the reduced price of 3/6). The grey dustwrapper has no wear, tears or pieces missing and is complete with the spine browned. There is NO RESTORATION to the dustwrapper. The basis for the 1940 romantic, psychological thriller movie by Alfred Hitchcock (his first American project) starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine that went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Cinematography, and remains one of the most highly-acclaimed films of this era. This 3-Act play premiered on the London Stage in early 1940 with Celia Johnson (as the second Mrs DeWinter) and Margaret Rutherford (as Mrs Danvers) in the leading roles, and played for six months and 350+ performances at the Queen's Theatre in London's West End until the theatre was destroyed during the Blitz in September 1940. This Play is a modern rarity and, at the time of listing, we cannot find another copy offered for sale on the web that has the price present to the inside flap. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Sinopsis

An orphaned young woman working as a maid is swept off her feet by a wealthy widowed Englishman, and quickly married him. But when she arrives at his estate she learns she pales in comparison with his seemingly perfect deceased first wife Rebecca, especially in the eyes of the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers. When Rebecca’s body is found on her shipwrecked boat the dark secrets held by the husband are discovered as well. Rebecca has had many adaptations in film, radio, and television, the most famous being the Academy-Award Winning Hitchcock adaptation released in 1940. Du Maurier wrote the novel in a reported 4 months. Her publisher, Gollancz, expected the book to be successful and ordered 20,000 copies for the first print run. Within a month the novel had sold twice that.
