An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. The lithograph was created by Robert Carrick (1820-1905) of Day & Son, after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray (1818-1854) was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War, 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery, Inhabitants, & Costumes of Afghaunistan (1847-48). This is plate no. 14, showing two falconers from Kohistan, Khudadard and Guldin, with their hawks. Rattray saw them in September 1841 when they were part of the cavalry escort of his brother, Captain Rattray. Green dealer's label on back of mat from Harold T. Storey, London. Very scarce. In Near Fine Condition: lithograph is clean and bright; minor soiling to mat.

First French edition, three volumes, 1787, Paris. Old full leather bindings with decorative gilt spines. Sparrman accompanied Cook on his second voyage as a naturalist and physician. This is an account of that trip and his observations of Africa which appears to have intrigued him more than than the Antarctic. Paginates: V.1: xxxii, map, 388, 3 plates; V.2: [2], 366, 5 plates; V.3: [2], 363, 8 plates. Vol. 1 has modern marbled blanks nearly matching the originals, other volumes with original marbled blanks. Complete with 16 plates, 1 large map. Overall condition is Very Good: hinges have been conserved, new blanks v.1, no interior writing or markings of any kind. One plate edge conserved with Japanese paper, small hinge tear on map conserved. Minimal foxing and staining. All paper edges marbled. Spine ends of volumes 1 & 2 somewhat diminished. The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, "Histoire Naturelle," was fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all of natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, it focuses only minerals, birds, and quadrupeds.
This fifth volume includes history of hooved animals – sheep, goats, rams, and pigs, as well as a description of dogs. While each volume of this set is illustrated, this particular tome includes over fifty full-page engravings.
