Green cloth, gilt lettering and decoration. frontispiece portrait of author, illustrations by John Tenniel. Text is in Japanese with English translation on opposite pages. Book is in very good very lightly used condition, text is mildly age-toned, former owner's bookplate on front pastedown, bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown. Original dust jacket has 1-1 1/2 inch chips from head and tail, (slight loss of text), and light chipping along folds. A rare copy of an early c1930s Japanese imprint.

Haro." Edge worn, spine chipped with minor loss, endpapers stained, very occasional foxing to text.

The Man of Feeling is a sentimental novel published in 1771, written by Scottish author Henry Mackenzie. The novel presents a series of moral vignettes which the naïve protagonist Harley either observes, is told about, or participates in. This novel is often seen to contain elements of the Romantic novel, which became prolific in the years following its publishing. The Man of Feeling, Mackenzie's first and most famous novel, was begun in London in 1767. It was published in April 1771, sold out by the beginning of June, and reached its sixth edition by 1791. Mackenzie wrote The Man of Feeling in the latter half of the eighteenth century, by the end of which the concept of sentimentalism had steadily become merely laughable and entertaining. Wilkins studies the many genealogical tables used by Boccaccio in both manuscript and early printed versions of his "Genealogia deorum gentilium," a mythological encyclopedia. Original exhibition catalog issued on the occasion of an exhibition of books containing illustrations by celebrated painter, engraver, publisher and illustrator Jean-Gabriel Daragnes - specifically, woodcuts. Illustrated with an original portrait etching of Daragnes by Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac, 11 black-and-white Daragnes plates, three depicting lesbian scenes, and an original Daragnes hand-colored engraving laid in showing a husband walking in on his wife in bed with her lover - a scene from Fielding's Tom Jones.
