Sobre este artículo
This offering of Regarding the Supernatural Character of the Hebrew and Christian Religion consists of copies of three letters, written in 1938, that discuss the contents of a book, "The Riddle of the World", written by Dr. D. S. Cairns, Principal of Christ Church College, Aberdeen, and prime minister of modern theologians published in 1938. In that book it was reported that Dr. Cairns says about as strong a word as can be spoken in defense of the supernatural character of the Hebrew and Christian religions and devotes considerable space to the friendly criticism of a humanistic presence.
The three copies of letters included are:
1. A letter from Cyrus Eaton to Walter Lippman, dated December 7, 1938, discussing the D. S. Cairns book.
2. A letter from Walter Lippmann to Cyrus Eaton, dated December 15, 1938, in reply to the Eaton letter
3. A letter from F. W. Patterson, President of Acadia University, to Cyrus Eaton, dated December 19, 1938, written after he read Eaton's letter to Lippmann, expressing his views on the subject.
Cyrus Stephen Eaton Sr. (December 27, 1883 – May 9, 1979) was a Canadian-American nvestment banker, businessman and philanthropist, with a career that spanned 70 years. For decades Eaton was one of the most powerful financiers in the American Midwest, and he was a colourful and often-controversial figure. He was chiefly known for his longevity in business, for his opposition to the dominance of eastern financiers in the America of his day, for his occasionally ruthless financial manipulations, for his passion for world peace and for his outspoken criticism of United States Cold War policy. [Wikipedia]
Walter Lippmann (September 23, 1889 – December 14, 1974) was an American writer, reporter, and political commentator. With a career spanning 60 years, he is famous for being among the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War, coining the term "stereotype" in the modern psychological meaning, as well as critiquing media and democracy in his newspaper column and several books, most notably his 1922 Public Opinion. [Wikipedia]
F. W. Patterson was the President of Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, from 1923 to 1948.
The three letters are all carbon copies of the originals, and have the tan background color typical of such copies. The Eaton and Lippmann letters are in good condition; the Patterson letter, which is chipped along the inner edge, is in fair/good condition.
The illustrations accompanying this description show all three letters.
