Major Charles Owen Hezlet was born in 1891, the son of Lt-Col R.J. Hezlet R.A., and was educated at Coleraine Academical Institution. He was commissioned Lt in the The Antrim RGA Special Reserve 8 Feb 1912. He served in France and Belgium from 29 June 1915 to 11 November 1918, was mentioned in dispatches on three occasions and awarded the DSO (LG 18.7.18 – details 18.7.18). He married Anni Maitland Somerset in 1920 and they had one son, Charles. He was a distinguisheded golfer, Captain of the Royal Portrush Golf Club from 1915, having been runner-up for the amateur Golf Championship at Sandwich in May, 1914. In 1920 he won the Irish Close title and in 1926 and 1929 he won the Irish Open Amateur title. He played thirteen international matches for Ireland between 1923 and 1931 and was Ireland's first player to win Walker Cup honours. In 1927 he also played for Ireland against South Africa and in 1952 captained a British team to Africa. He was Irish team captain ten times before 1932 and six times after 1948. From 1947 to 1953 he was a selector for Ireland. He is the brother of Mary, Florence and Violet. He died in 1965. Red cloth boards faded, stained and rubbed, corners mildly bumped, interior clean except some tanning to end papers as usual, binding tight, ink signature to title page.
