The Pattern of Existence in My Scheme; Reviews: The Negative. First Edition, 1952. "Basanta Mallik (1879-1958) was a significant twentieth-century Indian philosopher who followed his studies in philosophy at the University of Calcutta (BA, 1902; MA, 1903) with a period as a student then academic at the University of Oxford. Mallik began his time at Oxford as a law student, gaining a BA in Jurisprudence in 1916; he went on to complete a Certificate in Physical and Cultural Anthropology (1918) and a Diploma in Anthropology (1919). His ideas attempted to bridge philosophical debates drawn from 'East' and 'West'; Mallick, like others of his generation, was widely read in both traditions. This volume's prologue restates his main position with particular reference to the three historic accounts of reality he described as worked out in the mystical, humanistic and dualistic societies, and is based ona completely original formulation of two pairs of ultimate categories, the Absolute and the Relative and the Positive and the Negative: which formulation has made possible a fresh interpretation of the Hindu conceptions of Atman and Nirvana, the Greek conceptions of the Idea and the Individual and the Hebrew-Christian conceptions of Personal God and Community. It Provides for a resolution of the dialectic which has resulted from these ultimate human experiments and has led to ceaseless clash and warfare. The second part is devoted to the Evidence, which establishes the author's new theory of logic and proceeds to review Western thought in the light of this theory. An altogether new interpretation of European thought is evolved, with the relationships between the classical, the medieval and the modern speculative claims as the main theme and a constructive critique of Christian philosophy and of Descartes's position developing out of it. Modern thought -- correalationsism and logical positivism -- is fully reviewed." from the jacket flap.
