First edition, limited to 900 copies (S-K 1951). Original wrappers bound in. This extraordinary work provides a richly illustrated history of bookbinding in France, from its origins until the book's publication. Each volume's frontispiece consists of a beautiful tipped-in color plate. Each volume contains an excellent bibliography, and in the second and third volumes there are biographical essays on the leading binders of the period. This set has the exlibris bookplate in all three volumes of Lt. Alexandre Paul Rosenberg, the son of famed art dealer Paul Rosenberg, as well as inspiration behind the film 'The Train' (1964) where Lt. Rosenberg is played by the actor Burt Lancaster. The bookplate is designed by Pablo Picasso, better known inside the Rosenberg family as "Uncle Pablo" due to the close relationship Picasso had with Paul Rosenberg. Light rubbing along the front hinge of all three volumes, else a pristine set.
