Sobre este artículo
New York: Dutton, 1956 1st Am. ed. 189pp. hardback 8vo: Very Good in a Good+ dj [hint of shelf rubbing; else VG] A marvelous true story of the rescue of an eccentric Englishman, West de Wend Fenton (1927-2002), from the clutches of the French Foreign Legion in Algeria in 1955. "Beau West" had impulsively and foolishly joined the Legion only a few months earlier with the classic rationale of forgetting a spurned proposal of marriage. Several days of drowning his sorrows in drink had set him on his impetuous course. He saw a moment of battle action against Arab tribesmen but spent most of his time in various Legion stockades for attempted desertion. The author of this "escapade" helped to rescue Fenton, and this story is as much about Michael Alexander (1920-2004), a relation of Field Marshal Alexander and a prisoner at Colditz during World War II, as it is about his subject. Once safely back on English soil, Fenton married the woman for whom he had joined the Legion. An entertaining, improbable, quintessentially English story. The moral of this tale, which is the moral of all memoirs about joining the Foreign Legion, is "don't do it!"
