Remarks of Hon. F. W. Pickens on the Separation of the Government from All Banks, delivered in the House of Representatives October 10, 1837 [and] Speech of Hon. John Tipton of Indiana on the bill for the Protection of the Aborigines

Pickens was a member of the Democratic Party and served in the South Carolina house of representatives from 1832-34, where he was an ardent supporter of nullification. As chairman of a sub-committee, he submitted a report denying the right of Congress to exercise any control over the states. Pickens served in Congress as a representative from South Carolina from 1834 until 1843 and one can see from his remarks that he was a states' rights ideologue. Later he became Governor of South Carolina during the state's secession from the Union. On January 9, 1861, Governor Pickens sanctioned the firing upon the relief steamship Star of the West, which was bringing supplies to Anderson's beleaguered garrison. In a letter dated January 12, 1861, Pickens demanded of President Buchanan that he surrender Fort Sumter because "I regard that possession is not consistent with the dignity or safety of the State of South Carolina." He also approved of the subsequent bombardment of Fort Sumter. He remained a fervent supporter of states rights. Tipton was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1819, and in 1831 as US Senator from the state of Indiana, serving until 1838. He was appointed as US Indian Agent and was selected to lead the militia in removing Menominee's band of Potawatomie in 1838; they were relocated to Kansas, Indian Territory. Tipton was a strong supporter of Andrew Jackson. He served as chairman of the committees on roads and canals and Native American affairs from 1837 to 1839. In 1838, at the behest of Governor David Wallace, Tipton was selected as captain of the militia to organize the forced removal of 859 Potawatomi from the vicinity of Plymouth, to which they had agreed by treaty. He started the group on the two-month-long "Trail of Death" to Kansas. More than 40 of the natives died, most of them children. So much for the protection of "aborigines.
