Philadelphia: American Journal of Numismatics, 1882. Reprinted from the American Journal of Numismatics for January, 1882. "The coin which has attracted my attention is a hemidrachm, struck about 250 B. C., bearing on the obverse a chimaera, with the inscription Sigma Iota; reverse, a dove flying, Sigma in field. Sicyon, now Basitico, in the Peloponnesus, was the capital of the country of the same name. It was among the most ancient of the inhabited portions of Greece, preserving an autonomy under varying vicissitudes, and ultimately becoming a member of the Achaian League." 9 pp. mostly uncut. ex.mus. stamp/numbers on front cover. Bottom edge with tears and mildly at side edge. Vertical crease down the middle as if folded - line visible in text, but not obtrusive. Interior is tight, clean and Very Good +. Henry Phillips, Jr. was an author, philologist, and numismatist. He was born in Philadelphia in 1838 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1859. Although he was admitted to the Philadelphia Bar in 1859, Phillips devoted most of his life to researches and writings in the fields of philology, numismatics, and folklore. He was most closely identified with the American Philosophical Society where he served at various times as curator, secretary, and librarian. He died in 1895.. Wraps. Good.
