The recollection of the men and women who were friends or enemies of Justin McCarthy, author, historian, and Anti-Parnellite Nationalist member of the Irish Parliment. He traveled in high literary and political circles, so the book includes his experiences with writers Walt Whitman, Henery Ward Beercher, George Eliot, Anthony Trollpe, John Stuart Mill, and Rudyard Kipling and with politicians Charles Steward Parnell, Napoleon, William Gladsone, and Lord Randdolph Churchill.
Volume 2 is nearly perfect, but there are several chips on the spine and back of volume 1. Also, the morocco is missing from the back of volume 1. Both volumes have an elaborated bookplate from previousowner (Kenser) pasted onto the front endpaper
