Responding to an anonymously authored editorial published in the Central Courier of June 15, 1883, which is ascribed to then State Senator E.R. Sparks with the cooperation of editor Samuel Owen, Mr. Dickerson defends against a perceived attack on his father, Newton Dickerson, involving a lengthy business dispute: "The leading editorial headed "An Attack Upon Our Senator," looks very much like one of Bob Sparks' put up jobs Why don't you be a man and put your name to anything you write instead of trying to buy your editorials?" In closing, Dickerson notes that he has "no desire to persecute or misrepresent Mr Sparks" but he does not regard as persecution his effort to expose "a man who has made it a practice to swindle his fellow citizens."
