Symons, a veteran of the Wheeler Expedition was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1878. He was appointed Engineer Office of the Department of the Columbia in 1879. He was in charge of surveying the "Inland Empire of the Pacific Northwest" This important survey and report focused on the upper Columbia River and its tributaries. To determine its navigability and adaptability to steamboat transportation. It also provides details of the regions geology and history. This 1882 report, Senate document 186. Nicely rebound quarto 11.5 by 8 inches, 133 pages, 25 page sheet-map of the Columbia on a scale of one inch to two miles in rear, plus a folding map "Military Department of the Columbia" showing the location of the river survey sheets. Complete with 2 plates of views and 3 additional one page maps. Nicely rebound in brown cloth, spine has a black title block in gilt and rule. flawless floral endpapers. An exceptional example.
