General shelfwear, with corners and spine caps bumped and worn. 47th Congress, 1st Session. Ex. Doc. #186. Previous owner's name (M. Schuyler Elliot) stamped to title page and several additional places throughout. MAP OF THE UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER, FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY LINE TO SNAKE RIVER, on a scale of one inch to two miles, over 25 separate sheets and an index sheet, compiled from Surveys and Examinations Made in 1881. and diagrams, including a lovely depiction of the Grand Coule by Lieutenant Symons Topographical Assistant, Alfred Downing. One lovely drawing by Downing shows an engineer taking notes, holding the reins of his saddled horse, who waits behind.

Contains foldout MAP OF THE UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER, FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY LINE TO SNAKE RIVER, on a scale of one inch to two miles. 25 Sheets and an Index Sheet. From Surveys and Examinations made in 1881 by Lieut. Thomas W. Symons, Corps of Engineers, and Alfred Downing, Topographical Assistant, U.S. Army Final map folds out and includes Chief Moses and Colville Indian Reservations. Lieut. Symons (Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army) was the Chief Engineer of the Department of The Columbia.

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1882 Slim small folio, 135pp., with a map of the Columbia River from the boundary to the Snake River (25 sheets at end of report. The sheets are numbered consecutively from the boundary to Snake River and can be joined together into one sheet which shows the river continuously.) Fold-out 16 1/4" x 13" skeleton map of the Upper Columbia from Department map, showing location of river sheets and ancient Lake Lewis at the back. Original cloth faded, small label on backstrip, backstrip lettered in gilt. Bookplate and rubberstamps of the Rogers Free Library. § First printing, ex-library copy internally fresh and clean. "The report of an extensive survey made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with Lieut. Thomas Symons in charge. The survey was to determine the navigability of the upper Columbia River, and its adaptability to steamboat transportation." (Reese). Also issued in wrappers.
