Octavo (21cm); black cloth, titled and ruled in green and gilt on spine and front cover; map endpapers; viii,514pp. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "To Vernon & Bessie Beggs / with cordial wishes at Sac Prairie / July 21, 1941 / Sincerely / August Derleth." Moderate external wear, several tiny tears to spine ends, a few faint cup-rings and some faint soil to covers, with some offsetting to endpapers; only Very Good, lacking the dustjacket. Historical novel covering the period 1839-1848 in the Sac Prairie Saga, "when the area was changing from a mining and fur-trading region into a primarily agricultural one. The story focuses on Count Augustin Brogmar, who has fled his native Hungary for political reasons, and who becomes a leader in the new Sac Prairie settlement" (WILSON 549).
