Sobre este artículo
Atlanta/Cincinnati/Kansas City: Charlie D. Tillman (Undated, but likely 1896). "Flexible covers - Muslin Lined, INDESTRUCTIBLE" 240 pages.
A heavily used copy in rough condition! Original owner's name, city/state, and 1898 date on FFEP. On the plus side, it is still tightly bound, with a straight spine; no writing on the text pages. Negatives: Covers soft and extremely worn, with erosion on all edges; cloth backstrip is torn at the head of the spine and worn at the foot; faint penciled notation at top of front cover; FFEP has a section torn away at the bottom (doesn't interfere with readability); pages soft, toned, and soiled; numerous pages with corners folded down to mark the page (see our photos for condition).
ABOUT THE BOOK: THE REVIVAL NO. 2, 240 pages, Round and Shaped Notes. 274 Hymns. Flexible Covers - Muslin Lined (INDESTRUCTIBLE.) From the book: "Sam Jones' Opinion of THE REVIVAL NO. 2 after using it in the great Jones & Stuart Atlanta meeting in which over two thousand copies were sold: 'These songs go and they carry the people with them. Gospel principles and power, music and melody combined. I know of no better song book extant.'" (Samuel Porter Jones, best known as Sam P. Jones, (1847 – 1906) was an American lawyer and businessman from Georgia who became a prominent Southern Methodist revivalist preacher across the Southern United States. In his sermons, he preached that alcohol and idleness were sinful. He was known for his admonition, "Quit Your Meanness.") Charles Davis Tillman (1861, Tallassee, Alabama – 1943, Atlanta, Georgia)—also known as Charlie D. Tillman, Charles Tillman, Charlie Tillman, and C. D. Tillman—was a popularizer of the gospel song. He had a knack for adopting material from eclectic sources and flowing it into the mix now known as southern gospel, becoming one of the formative influences on that genre. Tillman was so recognized in his own time that, at the 1893 World Convention of Christian Workers in Boston, he served as songleader in place of Dwight L. Moody's associate Ira D. Sankey. Tillman's Assembly Book (1927) was selected by both Georgia and South Carolina for the musical scores used in public school programs. Tillman broke into radio early and performed regularly on Atlanta's radio station WSB 750 AM. Once in 1930 the NBC radio network put him on the air for an hour featuring his singing while his daughter accompanied on the piano. He also recorded on Columbia Records Tillman, who spent most of his life in Georgia and Texas, published 22 songbooks. He is memorialized in the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame and was among the first individuals to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
