The Bachrach Photography Studio was established in 1868, in Maryland (US) by David Bachrach. His son, Louis Fabian Bachrach (1881-1963), was taught photography by his Father and started to run the business from the 1920s. Louis Fabian Bachrach expanded the business after taking over from his Father, setting up studios across the US, where he photographed many of the rich and famous of the time. He was awarded numerous honours for his contributions to photography, and under his stewardship, the Bachrach name became synonymous with fine portrait photography. (University of Maryland.)
Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888–1957) was an American naval officer who achieved numerous feats of exploration during his lifetime. Byrd was a pioneering aviator and polar explorer, and was awarded with the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1927. He launched his first expedition to the South Pole in late 1929. Byrd claimed that his expeditions were the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. However, his claim to have reached the North Pole is disputed. (ODNB.)
