Published by William Heinemann, 1919. Hardback. Good/Good. Illustrated by Rackham, Arthur. Almost very good condition in an almost very good dustwrapper. Frontis and 50 superb colour plates, tissue-guarded and mounted on green card at rear of book, one pair of plates are on facing pages. 62 text pages. Green cloth, gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Damp marking to top of spine and along edges of front and rear covers out from that. Browning to endpapers, pastedowns and page edges/margins of green pages. Light foxing. Wrapper is edge-creased with tears and chips; a little loss; some grubby marks and foxspots.
Sinopsis
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow first appeared in a story collection by Irving called The Sketch-Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This first classic collection of American short stories also featured the popular Rip Van Winkle . The fantastical portions of Irving's works were inspired not only by his travels around Europe and hearing old folk tales and mythology, but also by a visit to upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains as a youth. His exposure to the old Dutch customs and ghost stories around Tarrytown, New York planted the seeds for his Headless Horseman character.
