Boston: Ticknor and Company, 1885. 12mo, gilt embossed decorative brown cloth. First edition with first issue advertisement on p. ix, but with battered type in word "sojouner" on p. 176, possibly indicative of a later printing. However, BAL describes a copy like the present one, inscribed by Howells as "first copy." With ALS by Howells written to his brother from Crawfordsville, Indiana on May 1, 1881 tipped in at front paste-down. Good copy, moderate wear at extremities, spine somewhat cocked, lacking a preliminary leaf, front and back hinges internally cracked but sound,
