Erich Maria Remarque's popular novel, originally serialized in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung. 'The Road Back', is set a few weeks after the former title, and follows the story of young German men who have returned from the First World War trenches. Erich Maria Remarque was a German novelist, best known for his best-selling work, 'All Quiet on the Western Front', which was inspired by his experiences in the Imperial German Army. It has been adapted into film numerous times. Due to his anti-war themes, Remarque was condemned as 'unpatriotic' by the Nazi party, but was able to escape consequences by relocating to the United States. Translated from the German by A. W. Wheen. With two newspaper articles regarding the work, alongside the publisher's advertising pamphlet inserted into the novel. The half title page is present. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the edges. Very light offsetting and the odd spot to the free endpapers. The original unclipped dust wrapper is in very smart condition. Light shelf wear to the edges with some chipping to the upper spine. Small closed tear of about 2 cm to the front panel. Internally, binding slightly strained to the centre but still very firm. Pages very bright and clean with just the odd spot throughout. Light age-toning to the edges. Scattered spots to the fore-edge. Near Fine

Sinopsis

Erich Maria Remarque , who was born in Germany, was drafted into the German army during World War I. Through the hazardous years following the war he worked at many occupations: schoolteacher, small-town drama critic, race-car driver, editor of a sports magazine. His first novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, was published in Germany in 1928. A brilliant success, selling more than a million copies, it was the first of many literary triumphs. When the Nazis came to power, Remarque left Germany for Switzerland. He rejected all attempts to persuade him to return, and as a result he lost his German citizenship, his books were burned, and his films banned. He went to the United States in 1938 and became a citizen in 1947. He later lived in Switzerland with his second wife, the actress Paulette Goddard. He died in September 1970.
