ROBERT MERRY'S MUSEUM. VOL. XXI and XXII. de Goodrich, S.G. editor - 1851

This is a very good copy, with the above-mentioned issues, of one of those important humorous books for the young that inspired so much of the vigoroud national humor that is a frequent feature of U.S. lit down through the years.  This copy was donated to the "Philomathesian Society", a college academic club by Lansing Burrows, once-famous Southern Baptist minister.

New York: Derby & Jackson, 1857. Hardcover. Good. Plates on yellow paper (8 including pictorial extra titlepage) + one plate given twice, by Whitney & Jocelyn Sc.. Large octavo green cloth spined boards (edges bit rubbed) All Edges Marbled. Half title + frontisplate of the children stepping into the balloon + engraved pictorial titlepage of the balloon flying past a volcano +308pp (includes dated printed titlepage). Brown spots to five leaves near front and a few slight offsetting from plates to text opposite. Three small corner creases but generally a nice tight clean copy.

6 issues per volume. Dark green sand-grain cloth over boards; blind stamped on covers with foliate central frame around publisher's device enclosed in ruled frame with foliate spandrels; black stamped titles and designs on spine; pale yellow end papers. Covers are clean but some slightly darkened areas that could be soiling or aging; rubbed at spine ends with some fraying; tightly bound; light foxing on end papers; owner name in pencil on front free end paper; date (1842) and vol numbers in pencil on title page; clean interior; some pages showing slight age darkening; leaves remain supple. 8vo, 380 pp (paged 192 + 188; illustrated with engravings.

Boston: Gray and Bowen, 1831. Full Leather. 12mo. Enraved half-title, 320pp., embellished with eight engravings with tissue guards. Bound by C. A. Wells of Boston in full embossed reddish-brown morocco, spine title and year gilt, yellow endpaper, all edges gilt, a very handsome copy with only an occasional spot of foxing, corners and edges lightly rubbed otherwise a very handsome copy with no chipping. This copy presents one of Oliver Wendell Holmes' early poems "The Lost Boy" with an engraving.

Boston: Charles Bowen, 1834.. 352pp. plus plates. 19th-century maroon morocco with elaborately blindstamped boards, spine gilt and elaborately stamped in blind, a.e.g. Head of spine chipped, upper joint partially split. Minor occasional foxing to text. Very good. In a maroon half morocco slipcase and chemise, spine gilt. Presentation copy, inscribed by John Quincy Adams on the blank cartouche of the engraved presentation leaf: "Louisa C. Smith from J.Q. Adams." Adams was the contributor of an essay entitled "The Plague in the Forest, A Fable," printed on pages 199-203 of this work. Louisa Catharine Smith (1773-1857) was the daughter of Abigail Adams' brother, William Smith, and Louisa Catharine Salmon Smith - and therefore, John Quincy's first cousin. The work itself is a collection of stories, poems, musings, and other short works related to the holidays.
