One of the most popular novelists of his time and perhaps unfairly neglected since his death, Walpole's reputation never quite recovered from being maliciously caricatured by Somerset Maugham in his novel Cakes and Ale. However, Grevel Lindop (a somewhat more perceptive critic than Maugham) wrote of Walpole that he was a very good storyteller and although this sequence of novels have dated in some ways they do have wonderful description and action sequences and are indeed the only group of significant novels set in the Lake District..
