Bu dil, Klasik Helenceden türetilen, Orta Çağ Helencesi tarafından yeniden şekillendirilen ve günümüze kadar ulaşabilen Helence diyalektlerden biridir. İyon kolonizasyonundan, yani MÖ 7. yüzyıldan itibaren Güney Karadeniz kıyıları boyunca konuşulmuştur. Konuşmacıları tarafından bu dil "Romeika" olarak bilinirken, Türkçede "Rumca", Yunanistan'daysa nispeten yeni bir terim olan ve "Karadeniz Helencesi" anlamına gelen "Pontiaka" olarak bilinmektedir. Vahit Tursun sadece kendi lehçesinin mükemmel bir uzmanı değil, aynı zamanda diğer Pontos lehçelerini, Çağdaş Yunancayı ve Türkçeyi de iyi bilmektedir. Tursun, anadili olan Romeikayı, verdiği gramer örnekleriyle bir yandan eşzamanlı olarak Çağdaş Yunanca ve diğer yandan da artzamanlı olarak Klasik Helenceyle karşılaştırmaya çalışmıştır.
