First American Edition, 1970. "This book has planned neither as a picture-book wit text nor as an illustrated literary essay. Pictures and letter-press are meant to form a whole; and shed light on the strange history of the English Romantic Movement. The author attempts to define the spirit of the movement by pursuing certain general themes, for example the Romantics' obsession with Youth; their interest in the realms of the Subconscious and the shadowy world of Sleep; their attitude towards Nature and Love; and the cult of extreme sensations. The Romantic artist was frequently influenced by poetic ideas and images and was usually moved by the same impulses as his literary counterpart." from the Preface. Price clipped. Red remainder dot on top text block edge with faintly age-toned text block edges, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Maroon cloth with embossed gilt architectual ruin on front board, gilt lettering to spine, and illustrated endpapers..
