[Rosove 277.A1, Conrad p. 62]. James Clark Ross (1800-1862) was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer of both the Arctic and Antarctic. He participated in Arctic exploration for the Northwest Passage under Sir William Parry and Sir John Ross's second voyage. On that voyage, James led a land expedition to locate the North Magnetic Pole in 1831. He then was given command of an expedition to the Antarctic for discovery and charting the coastline. Ross commanded the H.M.S. Erebus and Francis Crozier commanded the H.M.S. Terror. They discovered many islands, the Ross sea, Victoria Land and active volcanos named for the ships, Mt Erebus and Terror.
This book was written by Ross' great-grandson and includes unpublished material and information that was not included in the 1841 account of the voyage by James Clark Ross.
