Claiming to be the first book devoted solely to the intriguing history of Kew, this rather pedestrian account was written by a former secretary and civil servant. A flavour of its sycophantic royalism can be gauged by this quotation from chapter 17: "It therefore ceased from that time to be 'Royal' Kew in its full sense as a personal property of the monarch, but the glamour of interest of royalty remained as, instead of that intimate relationship, it now took on the wider role of serving the countries of the Empire over which the descendent of its founder reigned as Empress."
