Olive buckram over boards. The Medieval Library Series. Hardback: No DJ as issued. Benedict was an Italian Christian monk, writer, and theologian. In 1964 Pope Paul VI declared Benedict a patron saint of Europe. Benedict founded twelve communities for monks at Subiaco in present-day Lazio, Italy (about 40 miles to the east of Rome) , before moving further south-east to Monte Cassino in the mountains of central Italy. Benedict's main achievement, his Rule of Saint Benedict, contains a set of rules for his monks to follow. It has a unique spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness which persuaded most Christian religious communities founded throughout the Middle Ages to adopt it. As a result, Benedict's Rule became one of the most influential religious rules in Western Christendom. For this reason, Benedict is often regarded as the founder of Western Christian monasticism. His translator here, Francis Aidan Cardinal Gasquet OSB (1846 – 1929) , was an English Benedictine monk and historical scholar. He was created Cardinal in 1914. From 1878 to 1885 he was prior of the famed Downside Abbey, the senior community of the English Benedictine Congregations. He resigned because of ill health. In 1900, he became abbot president of the English Benedictines and was later President of the Pontifical Commission for Revision of the Vulgate. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xxviii, 130 pages .
