Much heavier and more prominent to text block edges, pastedown and free endpaper. Moderate cracking to gutters and hinges, exposing netting and causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends; visible split to main body of spine. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Published by Macmillan & Co., 1861. 1st edition.. Hardback. Good. Almost very good condition with no wrapper. Green cloth boards, gilt title to spine and gilt vignette to front. Tissue-guarded colour frontis plus numerous b/w text illustrations. x and 294 pages plus 24 page publisher adverts to rear. Front edge of spine fraying and split to outside edge. Corners lightly worn. Inscription in ink to half-title page. Frontispiece present but detached. A few hinges starting to pull. Some grubby marks present.
