This small booklet records for the first time the amazing story of the oil tanker 'San Demetrio' based on her officers' eye-witness accounts. Shelled and set on fire by an enemy battleship, she was abandoned by her crew; a handful of her men, adrift in a life-boats, found her again, boarded her, put out the fires, got her engines working again, and took her across the Atlantic to England. Dustjacket is handsoiled, edgeworn and has small tears at corners. Spine darkened. Some discoloration of endpapers. This is the true story of a tanker ship loaded with gasoline which was part of a 39-ship convoy in 1940 headed to Great Britain from Halifax. A German battleship attacked them, sinking four ships and badly damaging the San Demetrio. The crew escaped in a lifeboat, but sixteen of them returned to the ship two days later and managed to get it running. They sailed without charts or instruments to safety in Ireland. Scarce. 84 pp..
