Salar the Salmon is the successor to Williamson's Hawthornden Prize winning novel Tarka the Otter. Another story of land and water, it is the story of a five-year-old salmon called Salar, a very old sea trout named Trutta, and Gralaks the grilse. The book is divided into four seasonal parts: Tideways, Spring Spate, Summer River, and Winter Star-Stream. The tale encompasses adventures and excitements, ecstasies and endurances, from an escape from the blood-sucking lamprey, fishermen and poachers, to the leaping of the falls, the idle summer life, and spawning in the headwaters. Henry William Williamson (1895-1977) was an English author who wrote novels concerned with wildlife, English social history and Ruralism. The illustrator, Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-1979), was a renowned English painter of wildlife.
