Sobre este artículo

Francofurti ad Moenum (Frankfurt and Moen), German: Georgium Henricum Oehrlingium, 1713. Hardcover. Good. 16mo 6" - 7" tall. Woe unto any bookseller of note who has work to do but who holds in her, their or his hands a 310-year-old tome replete with historiated initials that feature gryphons and penitents, swords and Crusaders, kings and sceptres. The flowers are pretty, too, and the castles, foreboding.Salomonis Glassii Philologiae Sacrae Nucleus, ad Lectionem Scripturae Sacrae, edited by Salomonis Glassii (Salomon Glass, 1593-1656). Edition not stated, but is likely a First Edition Thus; the true First Edition was published in 1684, was penned solely by Glass, and included a Preface by Dr. Johann Frischmuth, whereas this exemplar was published in 1713 by (rendered in Latin) Georgium Henricum Oehrlingium (the same publisher as above), a leading publisher of theology and moral literature in Francofurti ad Moenum (Frankfurt and Moen), Germany, and added contributions by Glass and by three experts in sacred literature in ancient languages (rendered in the Latin): Henrico Philippo Heerwarto, Johan Frida Schmidio, ad Georgii Pritii.Comprised of various "sacred texts" as rendered from multiple authors, including Praefatio by Io. George Pritius (Georgii Pritii above), unpaginated, but 10 pp. in length, and then "Grammatica Sacra de Nomine," then "Grammatica Sacra de Pronomine," then Grammatica de Verbo," then "Grammatica de Adverbio," "Grammatica de Praepositione," "Grammatica de Conjunctione," "Grammatica de Praefixis," and so on (totalling 687 pp.), then "Synoptica, eag; Philologica ad Lectionem Biblicam  . . . ". Texts being in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, it becomes a sort of Rosetta Stone of putatively theological passages, complete with indexes galore and pronunciation guides.Inside the front flap, rendered as a tipped-in plate, is an accession sticker from the New-Church Theological School, denoting that the tome had been a gift in 1898 from Rev. S.M. Warren to the school, a seminary that specialized in Swedenborgian interpretations, located in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, a school that had been established some twenty years prior.Bound in full vellum, mottled a bit of exterior, with hand-lettering of title and author at spine, hand-sewn and with strings protruding at front and rear joints nicely; it's a little tank, measuring 6 1/2" x 4 1/4" in height and width, respectively. Top-stained in red, with speckled red fore- and bottom edges. The title page is double-page and folding (unusual) but with a portion of the right-hand page snipped out neatly, probably excising an author's name. Previous owner's inked inscription at first free endpaper, and spelled both "H. Meyer" and "H. Meier."  Scattered pencil notes up-front, presumably from the school librarian.Lovely black-and-white engraved heads and tails (baskets of flowers, slain enemies, fantastic creatures, birds), initials (some repeating) and even a few historiated initials, quite fine. Overall Good condition, with penciled notes up front, clean and unmarked thereafter, a bit toned but uniformly so, with slight waffling to paper. A diagonally creased final endpaper, a few snipped page tips here and there, but complete.A fabulous bookplate from Samuel Farmer Jarvis, D.D., with the adage, "Hora e Sempre," and "Sola, Salus, Servire, Deo," graces the inside of the front flap. An entry about him from the Archives of the Episcopal Church web-site notes that he was born in 1786 in Middletown, Connecticut and became the first historiographer of the Episcopal Church. Son of Bishop Abraham Jarvis of Connecticut, Reverend Jarvis became ordained in 1811 and "served as rector of several New York and Boston churches in his first 15 years of ministry, including St. James’ Church in New York City (1813-1819), and St. Paul’s Church in Boston (1820-1826)." Reverend Jarvis was "appointed the first professor of biblical learning at General Theological Seminary," and then he traveled extensively to European sites of worship and scholarship. After serving then as "a professor at Washington (Trinity) College and then as rector of Christ Church, Middletown from 1837 to 1842," he was named historiographer in 1838," and he led a productive life, dying in 1851.More to the point, he was well known for having a considerable private library. I'm honored to have held one of his sacred texts in my hands.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
