Sobre este artículo
London: James Heath. unbound. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 8 1/2" x 14 3/8"

This lovely bird's eye view depicts the fort of Samboupo, thought to be the present-day city of Makassar in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The city is depicted from the harbor, with various six ships seen along the coast and traveling through two rivers. Between the rivers is a large fort, with many residences and smaller structures, some also fortified, in the surrounding area. The outskirts of the city show farmland. This engraving was published circa 1750 in l'Abbe Prevost's "Histoire Generale des Voyages." Plate mark and original fold lines visible.

Jacobus van Schley (1715-1779) was a Dutch draughtsman, printmaker, and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart, and produced many book illustrations and engraved portraits in the mid-18th century. This is a beautiful example of his work.
