Oscar Lewis (1893-1992) was a writer on the history of the American West and California and major figure in San Francisco and the Book Club of California. This book is edited by Lewis from first hand accounts, with his notes and commentary, on the growth of San Francisco from the founding in 1776 in Yerba Buena cove as a remote outpost of Spain, the take over by Americans and the impact of the Gold Rush exponential growth to the destruction in the 1906 Earthquake.
